File extension lzh information

File extension LZH stands for Lempel-Ziv-Huffman and is associated with compressed archive files. These files are compressed using Lempel-Ziv and Haruyasu compression algorithm. These names come from the inventors who were called Lempel-Ziv and Haruyasu. This file extension is most common in Japan and is derived from the LZSS compression scheme. It also performs other additional tasks through the use of dyanamic Huffman coding. This compression format was started on the Amiga but it has moved to other platforms. Extension LZH also has a synonym which is LHA. In Japan, this extension is mostly used as an archiving format for games.
Even though files compressed with LHA typically have the file extension LZH, there are variations such as LHW, LZS and LZW. LHA uses the L277 algorithm in the same way as GZip and has a data tree structure plus block by block secondary status Huffman coding. LZH is not commonly supported and most big compression programs require separate plugins to extract or create LZH files. To open LZH files if one is using Windows, one should install WinRAR, Alpha ZIP, ArcDiff, BitZipper, WinZip 12 Pro, Smith Micro Stuffit Deluxe and PeaZip. For Mac OS there is MacLHA and Smith Micro Stuffit Expander.
